PhD Study: We are looking into how to optimise implementation of LEAPP’s postnatal care recommendations
Development of Australia’s first national postnatal guideline is well underway.
In a clinical area that often suffers from fragmented care delivery, the LEAPP guideline offers an opportunity to standardise postnatal care practices across Australia.
Unfortunately, the existence of a high-quality guideline does not guarantee its use in clinical practice and many barriers to implementation can result in a guideline being under utilised.
Our PhD student, Amanda Blair and research teams at The University of Melbourne and the Burnet Institute have performed a qualitative study to identify the common barriers and facilitators to postnatal guideline implementation in Australia.
Interviews completed
Participants interviewed were from all Australian states and territories and a variety of geographical and workplace settings.
After identifying the barriers and facilitators currently encountered during implementation of conventional postnatal guidelines in Australia and the strategies used to optimise their uptake, the study aims to understand how these barriers, facilitators and strategies may differ for implementation of a living, national postnatal guideline.
The study is now developing and validating an implementation planning resource and decision aid that supports guideline users in selecting appropriate strategies to improve guideline uptake.
